Hannah Hinojosa
I’ve been an artist all my life and taught art, including pottery for many years. Now I create my pottery and make videos to teach and share my knowledge and process in pottery, which I share on YouTube and Instagram.
Most of my work is functional, inspired by a desire to create art that you can use and enjoy everyday, such as mugs, bowls and plates. I'm the type of person who has to remind myself not to touch the art in the museum, maybe because as an artist and art teacher I handle art all the time, so I like to think I'm making art that you can and should touch. I like to make pieces that take mundane tasks and add a little more joy and beauty to the moment.
And when I get a creative burst of energy I enjoy making sculptures inspired by animals and plants. Sometimes creating stand alone sculptures, sometimes adding sculpture to functional pieces, until they aren't really functional any more.

I’ve always had a drive to build and create things with my hands. Over the years, I’ve cycled through a variety of hobbies and creative endeavors including painting, print making, woodworking, and 3D printing, all of which I still enjoy and revisit. But after my wife got me started on pottery, it became more than a hobby, and turned into a craft that I’ve continued to practice and make for years.
Today, I spend my studio time making a mix of everyday functional pottery and experimenting with new and large forms. While I enjoy finding and repeating a good form — like my potbelly mugs, and sturdy bowls— my favorite part of making pottery is trying new ideas. I love creating new shapes, experimenting with textures, and the challenge of making bigger, better and more complicated pots. I also enjoy experimenting with glaze combinations; I’ll test out different combos until I find a new favorite. Then use it on most everything for a while, until a glaze runs out or I just feel the need for a change, then I start experimenting again.
For me pottery is about the challenge and the experiment. In the end I hope I make functional pots that feel good and right when you hold and use them. I love when a pot's shape and glaze go together just right. But I come back for the experience, to see how far I can push the clay, and if the soda kiln has been good to me this firing. Each of my pots is unique because it represents my creative process, experimenting with new ideas and iterations on my favorites.
